I received letter stating a won money and to call this number, also got a check, how do I find out this is legit?

Just calls with no message

Same thing happened to me. I got a call about the sheriff is going to serve me papers this person gave me the 888-667-0080 # and a case #. I called them & they told me I was being taken to court for an unpaid credit card. They told me they would be able to reduce the amount if I paid befor the 30th of this month. I was stupid & believed Michael & said I would pay tomorrow after 3pm. When I found out it was a scam I quickly called my bank & cancelled my bank card so they can't get my money tomorrow. This is written on November 20, 2012.
